RAPID TISSUE NECROSIS (RTN)

REACTOR

Dosing device which adds reagents to tank water. E.g. a CO2 reactor (of which there are many types) mixes CO2 (carbon dioxide) from a pressurized or DIY system into the tank water.

RED ACROPORA BUG

They are a parasite found on the hard coral reef building corals in the genus Acropora, and feed on these corals exclusively.

RED / ROSE BUBBLE TIPPED ANEMONE (RBTA)

See Bubble Tipped Anemone (BTA)

REDOX

Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) or Redox potential is a measurement of water purity and of a systems ability to break down organic waste. The measurement is expressed in millivolts by an ORP monitor.

REEF

An ecosystem that sustains marine life.

REEF AQUARIUM

A saltwater aquarium featuring live corals to simulate a coral reef with a selection of invertebrate and vertebrate inhabitants. It may or may not include reef fish. Such aquariums place extremely high demands on lighting and water quality.

REEF CENTRAL (RC)

A marine aquarium bulletin board

REEF READY (RR)

Aquaria with pre-drilled holes and overflows.

REEF RUBBLE

A mixture of mostly dead coral skeletons, smail shells and dead rock rubble.

REFRACTOMETER

An instrument used to measure salinity by refraction, the amount light deflects from a straight line through a medium.

REFUGIUM  (FUGE)

A physically sectioned off portion of the water column (and accompanying substrate), inaccessible to predators, such that it allows and promotes the proliferation of micro crustaceans and other plankton producing organisms. See also :  Refugium Information

RESINS

Synthetic media used for chemical filtration through a process known as ion-exchange.

REVERSE OSMOSIS

A process of filtering tap water for use in the aquarium. Water passes through a membrane which filters out all elements leaving the water very pure. Trace elements you want will have to be adjusted as well as the pH

REVERSE OSMOSIS / DEIONIZATION (RO/DI)

Type of water purification

RICORDEA (RICS)

Scientific Name:     Ricordea florida
Classification:         Soft Coral
Common Names:    Ricordea
