GRAM-NEGATIVE / GRAM-POSITIVE
Named after Danish physician Hans C.J. Gram. Bacteria stained with colored dye according to Gram’s method are designated Gram-negative when it does not hold the color, and Gram-positive when it retains the color. Some antibiotics are more effective against Gram-negative bacteria, while others are more effective against Gram-positive bacteria. Broad-spectrum antibiotics treat both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.
GRANULAR ACTIVATED CARBOM (GAC)
A Filter Medium used to remove organic contaminants or residual medications from aquarium water. If used it must be renewed at regular intervals.
GRAVID
The condition in which a female fish is full of eggs and ready to Spawn.
GRAVID SPOT
Dark marking which can often be distinguished at the rear of the abdomen of female Livebearers (Platys in particular) indicating advanced pregnancy. What is seen are the embryos, particularly their eyes, showing through the female’s abdominal wall.
