Greetings from the behind the glass
Every year a 1000+ fellow hobbyist make the annual pilgrimage to the largest and longest running marine and reef hobbyist event of the year. This September marks the 22nd year of MACNA and, as always, it is sure to be a great event. On a personal level I am excited to be a part of it. As a hobbyist, what better place to be as a marine aquarium enthusiast then at an event with literally hundreds of other people that share the same interest.
Through this hobby and MACNA, I have been fortunate enough to have met and chatted with some of the greatest people associated to the hobby and industry. Folks like Bob Fenner, Anthony Calfo, Ron Shimek, Martin Moe and Eric Borneman, just to name a few. There are just to many to list them all. MACNA is a place to meet up with old friends and make new ones. It is also a great place to learn about new advances in the hobby and news that could shape the future of the marine aquarium industry.
In reviewing the schedule for MACNA (see http://macna2010.com/Speaker_Schedule#), you will see that the ORCA team has put together an impressive line up. They have 32 speakers with 43 presentations occurring over the course of three days. It is hard to see how anyone can walk away from this conference with out learning something new. If you have not already made plans to join us at MACNA, I would like to strongly encourage you to attend.
In closing. As the MASNA year draws to a close, I would like to thank my fellow bod members. For their patience, dedication and support. I would also like to thank the ORCA MACNA committee for all their hard work in what is surely going to be a great conference. I hope to see you all in Orlando on September 3 - 5.
Steve Allen
MASNA President

MASNA and Aquarium Fish International have worked together and now members can order or renew their subscription to Aquarium Fish International Magazine and get 12 issues (1 year) for only $11.
To take advantage of this great offer, Subscribe to Aquarium Fish International today!

MACNA XXII and MASNA Membership
What do these two things have to do with one another? As part of your MASNA membership you get into the exhibit area one hour early. This means first picks of choice livestock and equipment. As a MASNA member you also get preferred seating to the speaker presentations? So if your membership is expiring on or before August 31, 2010, we encourage you to renew your membership early. This will allow for the ORCA team to mark your MACNA pass accordingly.
This year we are also introducing a new policy for early entry and the new front row seating option. In the past only members of MASNA were allowed in early. This meant an individual membership for each family member. This has raised the question of family memberships for MASNA. After much discussion it was decided this was really more of a MACNA related benefit and knowing that members would want to share the MACNA experience with their families we agreed that members could pay a $5 donation per additional family member for early entry to the event floor and front row seating. These donations will be applied to the MASNA Scholarship Fund.
There are many reasons for this decision and believe me it was a tough decision. Since members can already share the website access, newsletter and other MASNA materials, we simply did not see the value or benefit to you, the member, or to MASNA.
To take advantage of this offer, simply register on the MASNA site and pay the membership dues ($20). Then at MACNA visit the MASNA registration booth on Friday and you can make the donation for your family members. You will be provided a receipt and the attendees badges will be marked appropriately.
What are you waiting for? September 3 - 5 Orlando Florida. Visit http://www.MACNA2010.com for more details.

Rare Odontanthias fuscipinnis Staying in U.S.
Glassbox-Design.com posted on August 06, 2010
The Odontanthias fuscipinnis (syn. Holanthias fuscipinnis) anthias is one of many serious reefkeepers dreams. For those here in the US, it has always been bittersweet. Collected in the deep waters of one of our own states, Hawaii, these fish are seemingly always shuffled off to Japan or Southeast Asia for a better market value. [Read More...]

Oil Spill Dispersant Could Damage Coral Populations
New Scientist posted on August 04, 2010
Coral populations in the Gulf of Mexico could fall because of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster—from contact not with oil but with the dispersant that's supposed to get rid of it. Laboratory tests suggest that Corexit 9500A, the dispersant used by BP to tackle the largest offshore oil spill in US history, stops coral larvae latching onto the surfaces where they usually mature.
The larvae, often the size of a pinhead, float in the sea before latching onto surfaces such as rocks on the sea floor, cliff faces or old oil rigs. It takes hundreds of years for a mature colony to develop. [Read More ...]
