In more reef environmental news, a recently published research confirms human activity plays a major role in the degradation and recovery of coral reefs in Hawaii. To no one's surprise, an increase in human-environment interactions results in reef decline. However, the study also found coral reefs rebound with great resiliency if given the chance, providing us hope that with proper management, damaged reefs can thrive again.

Conservation efforts are usually aimed at the preservation of habitat and the organisms that form the foundation of the food pyramid because we have a tendency to view ecosystems from the bottom up. However, a recent study published in Science tells us that the preservation of predators plays just as crucial a role. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography has issued a press release describing the top-down effects of apex predators in ecosystems.
