"Only a tiny fraction of sharks caught in the Atlantic - less than 1% - are under protection, even though most shark species are heading towards extinction, a report warns on Tuesday.

Officials from 48 Atlantic fishing countries are meeting in Istanbul this week to try to protect bluefin tuna, swordfish and other large fish.

"Denpasar. Scientists from the US-based Conservation International said they may have discovered 12 new fish species in the waters off of Bali.

"Right now the fish are being identified and classified. Hopefully by December, or at the latest by January, the names can be listed and formalized [as new species]," the group's coral fish researcher Mark van Nydeck said on Sunday.

"Researchers from the University of California Santa Barbara have found that certain fish may help coral reefs recover from cyclones and predators.

Coral reefs around the world are under threat from rising sea temperatures and over fishing. However, researchers have discovered one location in the South Pacific Island of Moorea where the coral seems to be protected by parrotfish and surgeonfish.

"Australia's Great Barrier Reef under severe threat from the mining boom.

The Australian and Queensland Governments are failing to safeguard the largest coral reef system on Earth, in a rush to ship coal and gas through the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef, says the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS).

"KIMBERLEY coral reefs are thriving in turbid inter-tidal conditions and defying conventional scientific understandings that corals need clear oceanic waters to survive.

Marine biologist Dr Barry Wilson last year spent time at Turtle Reef in Talbot Bay, on advice from One Arm Point's Bardi-Jawi people.

Dr Wilson says there is greater diversity of coral species in Kimberley reefs than in oceanic atolls or the Great Barrier Reef.

"Loggerhead turtles take almost half a century to reach maturity, say scientists.

A female turtle, the researchers report in the journal Functional Ecology, will not start to lay eggs until she is 45.

This estimate, based on examination of several decades of data on the turtles' growth, has implications for conservation efforts.

It reveals how long it takes for turtles hatched at a protected nesting site to return to that site to breed.
