Townsville, Australia - A world-leading project at James Cook University is breeding popular marine ornamental fish such as the Coral Sea Lyretail Blenny, the Banggai Cardinalfish and various Clownfish.

Dr Chaoshu Zeng, who leads JCU's Tropical Aquaculture
Research Group in the School of Marine and Tropical Biology, said the group had developed pioneering marine ornamental captive breeding techniques.

Conservation groups are fighting back with an unusual approach. "Eat them to beat them," is their slogan, and they're urging chefs and diners to enjoy the unwelcome fish as a tasty delicacy.

Key Biscayne, Florida - Lionfish may soon be a common feature in the shallow waters off Miami. A juvenile of these invasive exotic species was captured just off Key Biscayne's beach on Saturday, one of five sighted in the area within the past few weeks.

A science team on the research vessel Seward Johnson departs Fort Pierce, Fla. today for the eastern Gulf of Mexico to gather baseline data against which to measure change if oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill reaches the area. The expedition will use a submersible, a remotely operated vehicle and other technology to assess and record conditions in the water column and on the seafloor.

Three new marine species have been found in the deep waters of Colombia's Caribbean coast.

In the course of a twelve-year project, a team of marine biologists at the Institute of Marine and Coastal research (Invemar) explored depths of up to 700 metres.

They collected samples from a number of distinct taxonomic groups, including echinoderms (starfish and sea urchins), corals and deep-sea mollusks.
