Manila, Philippines - "Customs officials seized some P35-million worth of endangered marine species, including sea turtles, which were about to be smuggled out of the country.

Officials yesterday revealed the illegal shipment included 20 sea turtles (pawikan), black corals (antipatharia) and various seashells such as the helmet shell, squamosa and the tridacna that were all declared endangered.

Sarangani, Philippines - "Operators of the MV Double Prosperity, the ship that ran aground in Kiamba, Sarangani Province, may face a damage suit based on the Philippines Fisheries Code.

Sarangani Governor Miguel Dominguez expressed plans to sue the owner of the cargo ship, after damages caused by the ship was estimated to cost P30 million.

Chennai, India - "The submergence of two Islands, Poomarichan and Vilangusalli in the Gulf of Mannar underwater is primarily due to the impact of the generations old illegal coral mining in the region and not due to climate change, say independent experts who have been studying the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve.

"Sponges are a group of common and diverse aquatic creatures, very abundant in coral reefs where they are an important part of the ecosystem. But new research has found that if the balance is disturbed, sponges can outcompete the corals and damage the reef in the long term.
