"The study, funded in part by the Australian Research Council, found that fish numbers are increased in marine reserves where mangroves and reefs are close together.

Lead researcher Andrew Olds said the reserves meant fishermen would be able to catch more fish, even in protected "green zones".

"Fish probably use tools much more than we realize, according to new research from Australia.

Originally, tool use was believed to be a trait only exhibited by humans, but scientists have documented primates using tools for various tasks, as well as several bird species, such as the New Caledonian crow.

As fishermen from his Cook Islands home increasingly report dwindling shark numbers, the University of Auckland-educated Mr Lyon has proposed an ambitious conservation project.

"Twenty five years ago, on December 4, 1986, Walter Wyatt's plane crashed in the waters of Cay Sal Bank, a remote area between Cuba and The Bahamas. It sank almost immediately.

Walter, who now lives in Enterprise, Alabama, spent a night in the ocean fending off sharks, plugging holes in his leaking life vest, and hoping for a merciful end. The Coast Guard located and saved him the next morning and his harrowing experience made many headlines.

"Marine researchers say they are freezing coral samples from the Great Barrier Reef off Queensland as an insurance policy for the future.

In what is said to be an Australian first, scientists have frozen coral embryonic cells and sperm to create a bank of the species.

The cryo-preserved specimens will be held in a specialist facility for genetic material at the Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo in New South Wales."
