A Chinese coal ship that ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef off central Queensland this month is now being towed to Gladstone for repairs.

The Shen Neng 1 has been in safe anchorage near Great Keppel Island since being removed from Douglas Shoal, off Rockhampton, last week.

Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) says it is expected to take at least 18 hours for the ship to get to Gladstone.
