Bay Area Reefers has pioneered a successful pay it forward coral propagation program called Don't Break The Chain (DBTC). In the last year or so, the program has expanded to include 'DBTC-IC' (Don't Break The Chain-Inter Club) and boxes of hobbyist grown coral have been exchanged with clubs as far away as NY (BAR is in Norcal). There are also a number of pcs of software that BAR and other clubs have developed in order to track the 'chains'. Without getting into the details of the program, it occurs to me that this is right up MASNA's alley as far as promoting interclub propagation and community building nationwide. Does this seem like a practical idea for MASNA? TIA-Jim

We started using this program last year and it has to be the best way to spread corals throughout the clubs and country. The problem is for all those expensive designer coral sellers not being so exclusive anymore. What I like best about the program is if you lose a prized piece or the whole tank you can ask for a frag back from those you donated to. I haven't seen the software yet - sounds interesting.

I think it sounds like something MASNA should get involved with.

Anyway we can get a preview of the software? How would we incorporate this? Like Steven said this sounds like something we should promote and encourage. Possible even coordinate/administer between member clubs.

I was approached recently from one of my sponsors asking me if I thought our club would be interested in this.  I told him yes and we were going to propose this at our next meeting (August). He said that he did this a short while ago with a poster that was sent along with the corals and that everybody signed the poster which he received back after the chain ended.  Sounds interesting.  I'd like to know if MASNA decides to do this.

I too would like to see this happen some how. Just not sure how to implement the program. who would/could manage it, etc. This is why I am curious about the tracking software.

Welcome Susan and TBRC!

Thank you for the welcome and glad to be here finally!  Would you like for me to inquire about such software from the person I know that did do the chain not to long ago?

The tracking we are currently using is in drupal, the same software that runs the club forums. I also have a talk about the program if anyone is interested.
