Are any club members out there breeding marine angels, tangs or other commonly imported saltwater fish? I know there are quite a few basement clownfish and dottybacks breeders (and that's great!), but I would be fascinated to hear about anybody doing what Martin Moe did 40 years ago - breeding and raising French (Pomacanthus paru) and Gray Angelfish (Pomacanthus arcuatus).

Hey Tom, I have a spawning Trio of Centropyge argi, but I really haven't pushed hard to try to rear them inland. As you know, I'm all tied up with Oxymonacanthus longirostris right now (I hope you caught the CORAL article) - this latest run is still pushing 40-50 fish at 26+ days. Before I circle around to the Centropyge, I'll probably reattempt my various Synchiropus or possibly the Serranus annularis that just started spawning (as you likely know, another Serranus sp. has already been reared in captivity, so there's at least a chance).

That's great, Matt! Be sure to send in your Spawning Reports and we'll get them published! People have really responded positively to your Apogon margaritophorus report.

Acutally Tom, I noticed you have A. margaritophorus listed as having Larvae and Juveniles...I never got that species that far, but I did get A. leptacanthus. Did I send the wrong report, or maybe I sent two and they got merged? I should probably submit reports on a myriad of species, especially those that I got "Real close" on like A. leptacanthus, Pseudochromis cyanotaenia etc..

Oops. I was overly excited about the spawning! I have removed both the L and the J since there were only eggs... Thanks for the heads-up.

And, yes, Matt, you should in your reports. You would most likely be one of the BR's top breeders. ;-)

Just a follow-up - some folks have the impression The Breeder's Registry only accepts Spawning Reports from breeders who have raised larvae - NOT TRUE!

Even if you have simply witnessed a SPAWNING EVENT, we want to hear from you. Be it spawning marine invertebrates or fish, the BR values everyone's submissions.

Tom--I have a lot of trouble with the bread-and-butter species--I've never had a clownfish spawn for me, for example--but I do seem to have some luck with the harder fish. I have regular spawnings of mandarins, cleaner wrasses, sixline wrasses, harlequin filefish, and am getting courtship (maybe spawning, but haven't found the eggs yet) with starry blennies. I guess I should try to get some angels but I've never owned any (I really like brain corals and other corals with fleshy polyps, so I've never risked them).

Andy - You have done remarkably well! The large angels and the mass spawners like tangs just simply have to be kept in larger broodstock tanks. I say "simply," but of course this requires a correspondingly large commitment of resources and time dedicated to their husbandry. Raising the larvae of big fish is not much different than the smaller species.
