Let's start with any club members actively involved in breeding clownfish. Just let us know if you, or anyone in your club, is working on this marine aquarium staple.

Michelle Tsai of DFWMAS has been breeding them. She recently started a website to answer questions. http://www.breedmyfish.com/ and has a couple articles posted here as well on breeding Clownfish and Banngai.

I forgot to mention that there are several other people in Michigan that have become involved in breeding.  We have a forum at http://www.masm.org/mForums/tt.aspx...d=79  I'm not going to repeat everything from there but I will be happy to contribute here in the future.

I've made several attempts at raising Clarkii Clowns.  I've gotten fifty fry/larvae through day five, however suffered a rotifer crash and quickly lost them.  This week's clutch is due Sunday night, but due to my moving tanks from a 42 to a 100, forcing my female clown to lay on day 16, whereas she had been laying on day 11,  my "clean out" from the female clown is at least 50% which I am wondering if this is the result of the extra time she carried the eggs. To delete the possibility of rotifer crashing, I've been raising 4 cultures (3.5 - 4 gallons of a 5 gallon bucket) and spending as much or more time with them as with my display tank.  With 3 days to go at least three of the four cultures are very dense. Hopefully next month I'll be reporting my first success!

I have had a pair of Maroon clowns I was waiting years for them to spawn and they did just recently did after the addition of rose bubble tip anemone. The cared for the eggs that appeared healthy for about 6 days and then I notices most of them gone. The next day they were all gone. This was very disappointing. I don't know if the loss was from the other tank mates or the clowns themselves. I hope that the next batch does a little better. I am concerned that she (large 5 inch female) is not aggressive enough to keep away the other fish in the tank. All the fish seemed to know the eggs were there. I hope I have better luck with the next batch.

It is strange to hear of a maroon female clown that is not aggressive.  I can't count the many times mine took bites out of my hand.....even though it didn't hurt, she would have that look of "you take that."  I have a hugh rose bubble-tip anemone and the female was smart enough to lay under the nem for protection. As far as you losing your batch, did you try any additives that might have de-oxgenated (sp) the tank?  I put in some amino acids or something to that effect and ended up with a bad batch.  The females seemingly know when eggs are not fertile and eat them.  How they can pick them off from a batch of hundreds is amazing. If you don't have a host anemone it might be wise to consider one as that would compensate for the non-aggressiveness of the female.....but actually once the eggs are laid the male becomes their watchdog, is your male aggressive?

As far as mine, I was able to have a few survive, which is now down to just two, and I have sold the mated pair, but I still have the satisfaction of being able to say I raised a few fish from fry (even though clowns are supposedly not that difficult.

Good luck with yours!

Well, Tj, compared to something like guppies or convict cichlids, Clowns are certainly much more involved. They may be "easy" for marine fish, but they're much more involved than entry-level FW fish. So don't sell your accomplishments short!!! :)

I have about 250 true percula young in my 35 gallon growout. They are now 3 months old and are just starting to get their tail stripes. This is my first attempt at breeding and I am wondering about what constitutes "saleable fish". Most of them look fine but some have gills that look bent and kind of stick out. My LFRs have been receptive to buying the fish but I don't want to bring in something unacceptable. Anyone have experience with selling their young fish?
