A few people in the hobby were doing PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) measurements of various bulbs, charting that information and trying to help us better understand how light penetrates into our tanks. At many marine conferences, Sanjay Joshi spoke about his PAR testing with a variety of reflectors, bulbs and ballast configurations. The one thing that continued to stand out in my mind was that I needed better reflectors.

Just about every month, I travel to a different saltwater hobbyist club to speak to the general membership. Inevitably, these trips involve a tour of local aquarists’ private home displays and while I see some gorgeous aquariums, I am always struck by how much money people pour into their tanks while forgoing their own aquarium education.

When establishing a tank, two of the more popular choices are to build a display aquarium or a marine habitat. Each choice has its benefits and drawbacks. They also can have very different needs as to equipment, maintenance, and livestock. A brief description of each type tank and a basic view of their requirements is given below.
